Course Grade Components

Homework (daily):20%
Quizzes (daily):20%
Attendance and Participation (daily):20%
Presentations (weekly):10%
Projects (periodic):15%
Exams (semesterly):15%

Homework (20%)

Homework will be assigned daily and will be related to the topic of the day's class. You should have your homework done before class starts the next day so that we can go over it in the beginning of class. Homework is graded for completeness, not accuracy (the accuracy is checked together at the beginning of the class). While I will be happy to check late homework for accuracy, you will not receive credit for homework turned in after it's due.

Quizzes (20%)

There will be a quiz every day of class, except for on days with an exam scheduled. The quizzes test the topics learned the previous day and are graded for accuracy.

Attendance and Participation (20%)

The majority of the attendance grade is participation. You are expected to participate in all class activities.

While this part of the grade is mainly intended to evaluate participation, participation requires attendance. Regular attendance is also absolutely necessary for this course since you will be actively engaged in the learning process. Also, if you miss a day of class, you are not only missing instruction, but you are missing graded content such as quizzes and checking your homework. Bear in mind as well that missing one day of class in this summer session format is equivalent to missing a whole week during the academic year.

If there is a legitimate reason that you'll have to miss class, please discuss it with me as soon as possible. Absences and partial absences will be totalled for this portion of the grade. Missing more than one or two classes may have a severe impact on your learning and on your grade.

Presentations (10%)

On the last day of class each week you will prepare and give a presentation to the class on a different topic. I will assign the theme of the presentation and you will have to choose the specific topic to present on. Please include as much multimedia as you deem appropriate.

Projects (15%)

Periodically throughout the term (every 2 weeks or so) you will be assigned a project. These will mostly or entirely be translation projects, where you will translate a page or two from a source and on a topic decided upon in consultation with me. Each project will be assigned two or more days before it's due, so that you can work on a draft and ask me about any issues you run into. While these translations will be graded based on accuracy, it is understood that your knowledge of the language will not be sufficient to figure out everything, even with the help of a dictionary. In fact, the point of the projects is to push the edges of what you're capable of understanding—it is not expected that you can simply go home and complete a translation using your current knowledge of the language. This is exactly why it's important to start on the project as early as possible and seek help on things you don't understand.

Exams (15%)

A midterm exam will be given at the end of the first 4 weeks (Friday, July 11th) and a final will be given at the end of the second 4 weeks. The exams will be cumulative (covering topics starting with the first day of class). No early or make-up exames will be given except following applicable university guidelines.
