The main point of the quiz section is to review what you've learned in class and from the book by working with the material. This will be done by working with data and examples. Be ready to get your hands dirty.

Participation (10%)

Please come to section. You're graded on participation—this requires attendance. You're encouraged to ask questions, answer questions, make relevant comments, contribute to discussions, etc.; this is an intro class—you will not be ridiculed for asking even simple questions. Also, please bring your textbook (Language Files—see course website) to section, even though we won't always use it. Other opportunities for earning participations points include posting relevant questions and responses to the section mailing list and random extra credit assignments.

Quizzes (15%)

There will be a short quiz at the beginning of section once every week or two. Usually it will be announced ahead of time, but if you're keeping up with lecture, section, and the readings, then you should do well if somehow it isn't mentioned beforehand. The point is not to give you a grade so much as to keep you thinking about what we've gone over recently, and to provide you with an additional means of review for the exams. Giving you a grade on potentially pop quizzes, however, should provide you with another incentive to come to class every day. ;) Make-up quizzes will not be given, since the lowest grade will be dropped.

Homework (20%)

Homework will generally be due in section weekly. Homework should be handed in when you come to class. If you arrive late, please turn in your homework immediately. If your homework is handed in after section is well under way (5-10 minutes), it will receive a late penalty (-10%). If you turn in your homework between the end of the class it's due and when the graded homeworks are returned, then it will be corrected, but you will not receive a grade. This is still valuable to you, as reviewing corrected homework is a good way to study for the midterm and final exams. Your lowest homework score will be dropped.
